Tonganoxie youth wins NFL Punt, Pass and Kick competition
A Tonganoxie Elementary School student won his division in the NFL Punt, Pass and Kick Team Championships and was recognized Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium.
Patrick Griffin, a second-grader at TES, won the 6-7 age-group division.
Patrick received a game ball trophy during pregame activities Sunday. The Kansas City Chiefs were hosting the Buffalo Bills in a game the Chiefs won, 30-22. Now 6-5, Kansas City won its fifth consecutive game.
In addition to winning his division and receiving a trophy, Patrick also could be seen on television for about 5 seconds as part of a segment on the NFL Play 60 program.
In October 2007, the NFL launched the program as a national youth health and fitness campaign focused on increasing the wellness of young fans by encouraging them to be active for at least 60 minutes each day. The program was designed to help address childhood obesity.
Patrick advanced to compete Sunday in Kansas City, Mo., after a qualifying performance at a sectional competition earlier this year in Tonganoxie.
The second-grader now waits to see whether he will advance to the national finals.
The top four finsihers from all the team championships advance to the national event.
NFL Punt, Pass and Kick competitions are offered to youths in five age divisions for both boys and girls. Age divisions are 6-7, 8-9, 10-11, 12-13 and 14-15.
