Big second-half rally falls short for Tonganoxie High girls

December 16, 2015

The Tonganoxie High girls basketball team got off to a slow start Friday on the road against Ottawa, but the Chieftains showed signs of life in the second half.

THS was down, 24-11, at halftime, but stormed back with a furious rally early in the third quarter.

“I was happy with how we tougher coming out of halftime,” said THS coach Matt Frost. “We outscored them, 13-2, to start the second half and got with two.

“We ran out of gas and that’s my fault. I should’ve subbed a little more.”

That 24-11 score turned into 26-24 with Ottawa still leading.

But as Frost mentioned, the team ran out of steam. Ottawa found some offensive production, scoring 20 in the final quarter on the way to a 46-34 victory.

Mackenzie Prize led the Chieftains with 9 points, while Taylor Lee and Kaitlin Hall each had 8 points.

THS went 12-for-51 from the field overall, a 23.5-percent shooting night. Inside the arc, the team shot nearly 32 percent (7-for-22) and shot 17 percent from 3-point range (5-for-29).

The team went 5-for-9 from the free-throw line, 55.6 percentage. THS had 20 rebounds on the night — 15 offensive and 5 defensive rebounds. THS also committed 14 turnovers on the evening.

Tonganoxie is set to play Basehor-Linwood on Friday.
