Tonganoxie wrestling tough on the road

By Shawn Linenberger - | Dec 16, 2015

Tonganoxie kept on plugging away in tournament competition this past Friday and Saturday at the Eudora Tournament of Champions.

Several wrestlers turned in third-place finishes as THS placed sixth out of 23 teams.

Rossville, the top-ranked team in Class 3A, won the meet with 287 points. THS had 170 in sixth.

“They wrestled tough,” THS coach Ross Starcher said about his team. “A lot of them had seven, eight matches. They just kept going and going.”

Freshman Korbin Riedel (12-1) placed third in the 120-pound division with an 11-0 major decision against Shawnee Mission South freshman Isaias Olson (11-2).

Gad Huseman also took third at 126. The THS freshman (14-1) defeated Ottawa sophomore Jared Parenti (12-5) by fall at the 1:45 mark.

Continuing with the bronze medals was THS sophomore Caden Searcy (14-1), who defeated Lansing senior Zach Caraccillo by a 7-1 decision.

At 152, Justin Hand placed fifth. The sophomore, now 6-7 on the year, defeated Ottawa sophomore Chandler Bloomer, 5-0.

At 132, THS sophomore Patterson Starcher (11-4) placed sixth. He lost because of injury.

Marcus Barnes, at 182, placed eighth. The THS senior (2-4) forfeited to Fort Scott senior Jordan Crowder (5-6).

Austin Lang also placed eighth. The THS sophomore (2-4) lost by fall to Holcomb sophomore Cameron Newman (5-4).

Others competing but not placing were Dawson Bennett (138), Jay Willcutt (160) and Cody Knight (170).

THS actually had the team lead on Friday, but eventually couldn’t keep up with not having wrestlers in the upper weights.

“We have seven or eight and everyone else has 14,” Starcher said. “It kind of killed us.”

THS has dual matches against Ottawa and Santa Fe Trail on Thursday in Ottawa.

It’s then home Saturday for the Randy Starcher Memorial Invitational.

Starcher said Schlagle, which took third at Eudora, and Blue Valley Southwest were additions to this year’s lineup.

“We always perform good at home,” Starcher said. “There’s soothing about our tournament that makes the guys bring it. Nobody wants to lose at home.”
