Piper High snaps Chieftain girls’ winning streak

The Tonganoxie High girls basketball team had a week off and a two-game winning streak heading into its game Friday at Piper.

The Chieftains left Kansas City, Kan., without a winning streak.

Piper led by five, 17-12, after the first quarter, but THS couldn’t cut into the lead in the second quarter when PHS put up 19 points.

The Pirates went into halftime with a 36-21 lead and kept rolling in the second half on their way to a 65-30 victory.

Tonganoxie shot nearly 69 percent from the free-throw line (11-for-16), but had trouble scoring from the field. THS went 9-for-42, shooting 21 percent. They went 1-for-5 from three-point range.

Piper went 24-for-58 from the field. Hot three-point shooting helped the Pirates, asnine of those makes were three-pointers. The team shot 41 percent overall from the field.

The team also went 8-for-11 from the free-throw line.

Tonganoxie’s largest run was 7-3, while Piper’s was 21-3.

Piper also outrebouned Tonganoxie, 40-27 and capitalized on turnovers. PHS had 20 points off turnovers, while Tonganoxie had 0.

Sarah Ahart led Tonganoxie scoring with 14, while Tressa Walker added seven and Taylor Lee had four. Mackenzie Price scored three points.

Tonganoxie dropped to 4-10 on the season with the loss.

The Chieftains face archrival Basehor-Linwood on Friday.
