Basehor-Linwood girls slip by Chieftains

By Shawn Linenberger - | Feb 16, 2015

The Tonganoxie High girls basketball team had Basehor-Linwood right where it wanted the Bobcats.

The low-scoring affair saw the Chieftains scrape and battle and eventually had a one-point lead.

The Bobcat girls, though, proved to be too much late for THS.

BLHS won the game, 30-19, in a contest between two archrivals Friday in Tonganoxie.

The teams each scored four points in the first quarter and BLHS was clinging to a 12-10 halftime lead. It was in that second half, though, that the Bobcats were able to get just enough separation. Basehor-Linwood outscored THS, 18-9, in the second half. Sarah Ahart scored 11 points in leading Tonganoxie scorers, while Tressa Walker scored 5 and Kaitlin Hall 3.

THS shot nearly 18 percent from the field (6-for-34) and nearly 37 percent (7-for-19) from the free-throw line.

Basehor-Linwood shot 24 percent from the field (9-for-37) and 48 percent from the stripe (12-for-25).

Earlier in the week, the Chieftains dropped a 52-27 decision to Bonner Springs. That game also was in Tonganoxie.

Bonner Springs broke out to an 11-1 lead in the first quarter and Tonganoxie just couldn’t recover. BSHS outscored the home team in every quarter.

Sarah Ahart led THS scorers with 11, while Mackenzie Price scored six. Taylor Lee, Tressa Walker and Cheyenne Ford each scored two in the loss.

THS shot 22 percent (8-for-36) from the field and 52 percent (11-for-21) from the free-throw line.
