On to regionals

Tonganoxie High was able to earn a few medals in front of its home crowd Saturday at the Kaw Valley League tournament.

The Chieftains had three wrestlers take home bronze medals at the meet.

Aidan McClellan (17-13) defeated Lansing’s Teague Rickle (18-14), by major decision, 11-0, to take third in the 106 division.

Patterson Starcher (29-11) also won bronze at 113 with a 7-3 victory against Turner’s Corbin Clark (11-17).

Gad Huseman, meanwhile, won third at 126 with a 6-3 victory against Mill Valley’s Jarrett Bendure (27-11). Huseman improved to 25-11 on the year.

At 138, Garrett Martin placed fourth after losing a 1-0 heartbreaker to Piper’s Zach Zarazee (13-9). Martin’s record now is 24-16 heading into regionals.

Cody Knight was another THS wrestler to finish in the top four.

Knight placed fourth at 170. He finished in that spot because of injury and now is 7-20 on the year.

As a team, THS finished tied with Bishop Ward for sixth place with 72 points.

Mill Valley won the title with 209 points, finishing just ahead of Lansing. The Lions tallied 200 points.

THS now will head to regionals Friday and Saturday in hopes of individual wreslters punching their tickets to state Feb. 27 and 28 in Salina.

Theteam will head south for a Class 4A regional in Baldwin City.

Joining Baldwin and Tonganoxie are Atchison, Basehor-Linwood, Bonner Springs, De Soto, Eudora, Holton, Royal Valley, Bishop Ward, Piper, Sumner Academy, Jeff West, Perry-Lecompton, Santa Fe Trail and Bishop Miege.

Other regional sites are Hays, Louisburg and Pratt. State will be at the Salina Bicentennial Center.

Tonganoxie senior Asher Huseman, one of the top wrestlers in the state returning this year, has missed the last few competitions and will not compete in the postseason. A knee injury has sidelined him for the rest of the year.
