Former Fairmount fire chief given probation

By Shawn Linenberger - | Jan 28, 2015

A former township fire chief has been given a year of probation for his theft of more than $14,000 from his township.

The decision happened today in Leavenworth County District Court, according to county attorney Todd Thompson.

Jeffrey Theno, former Fairmount Township fire chief, pled guilty Dec. 10 to felony theft.

He bid to remodel the fire station in February 2013 and continued to ask for money to remodel the station until township treasurer Brandon Roberts investigated where the money was going.

When the Kansas Bureau of Investigation and Leavenworth County Sheriff’s Office investigated, they found that Theno had taken more than $14,000 by six checks from the township without buying any supplies.

Because of sentencing guidelines and Theno’s lack of a previous record, he received 12 months probation and an underlying sentence of six months.

A restitution hearing is set for Feb. 18.

Theno has said he plans to pay back the money in full and finish the work .
