Fire up the cookers in McLouth

The smell of barbecue might be hard to resist this weekend in McLouth.

The annual McLouth BBQ Blowout will be Friday and Saturday at Prairie Park.

The KC Barbecue Society is sanctioning and McLouth Recreation Commission sponsoring the Northeast Kansas State Barbecue Championship.

The grand champion will qualify for American Royal and Jack Daniels barbecue championships.

Several activities are planned along with the barbecue.

An exotic animal petting zoo and pony rides will be available 6-9 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday.

On Saturday, the Kiwanis Club will have a country breakfast starting at 7 a.m.

Pancakes and biscuits and gravy will be featured at the feed.

If one has a sweet tooth, there’s something else for you at the event.

The McLouth Crackerjacks 4-H Club is having a pie-baking contest and pie sale.

There also will be the Jefferson County Area Chamber of Commerce Backyard BBQ Championship, along with classic car, truck, motorcycle and tractor display at the park.

Various activities also have been planned for youths, as well as firefighter demonstrations and water fights and demonstrations from the Jayhawk Model Masters Remote Control Airplane Club.

Vendors will be selling food and other items.

The backyard barbecue event is open to Jefferson County residents and Leavenworth County residents in McLouth USD 342.

Entry fee is $25 for a space measuring 20 feet by 20 feet with no electricity.

There are two categories: The Other White Meat and Where’s The Beef.

Participants cannot be members of a current Kansas City Barbecue Society barbecue team.

Grand prize is $100, along with a trophy and ribbon. Reserve champion receives $50, trophy and ribbon.
