Tonganoxie High has 6 all-league selections

By Staff | Jun 10, 2015

Tonganoxie High had several student-athletes make all-league teams for spring sports.

The Chieftains had six selections among three sports — softball, baseball and girls soccer. Here’s a closer look at each team’s selections.

Softball

The Tonganoxie High softball team made major strides in 2015, coming a game shy of a state appearance with an 11-8 record.

That success translated to three selections on the all-Kaw Valley League team.

Freshman third baseman Mackenzie Sample was first-team infield, while junior outfielder Halley Calovich earned second-team honors. Freshman outfielder Reagann Bennett was an honorable mention selection.

Other first-team infield selections were Basehor-Linwood junior infielder Kali Jacobson, Piper senior Brooklyn Lauritzen and Mill Valley senior Lexi Myers. Second-team outfield selections were Bonner Springs senior outfielder Kaitlin Reed, Mill Valley freshman Payton Moeder and Piper senior outfielder Ashley King. BLHS senior Madison McDowell was first-team utility, MVHS catcher Lacie Myers first-team catcher and BLHS sophomore Ashley Hoffman and Piper junior Abby Henry first-team pitchers.

Other second-team selections were BSHS sophomore Alexus Tendick, Lansing junior Briele Rees, Turner senior Kaylynn Stratton and MVHS sophomore Kristin Kelly (infielders), BLHS junior Jenna Donnelly, Lansing junior Emma Stebbins (outfielders), BSHS senior Mikaela Bennett (utility), Piper freshman Kamryn Sparks (catcher) and Lansing senior Hersh McKenzie and MVHS senior Kaitlin Parker (pitchers).

Though THS freshman catcher Audrey Miller did not earn all-league honors, she was a Lawrence Journal-World all-area first-team selection.

Soccer

The Tonganoxie High girls soccer team landed two players on the all-Kaw Valley League team after it posted a 6-8-2 record this season.

Senior Sophie Breedlove was second-team defensive player and sophomore Amanda Martin was all-league honorable mention as a forward.

First-team selections were forwards Berkley Sharp (Basehor-Linwood sophomore), Miyah Hightower (Bonner Springs junior) and Cori Carver (Mill Valley freshman). Defensive players on the first team were Kennedy Bacon (BSHS junior), Hailey Budke (Lansing senior), Lindsey Hamner (Mill Valley junior) and Lyndi Lloyd (Piper senior).

Lansing sophomore Gillian Ruff earned all-league first-team honors as goalkeeper and Piper freshman Emily Wilson was utility player.

Second-team forwards were Emma Hamilton (LHS sophomore), Sydney Hookstra (MVHS sophomore) and Katie Trzok (PHS senior), while midfielders were Erica Baker (Bishop Ward junior), Kacey Kinley (MVHS sophomore) and Gabi Rodriquez (PHS freshman).

Defensive players joining Breedlove were Lansing junior Bailey Zinser, MVHS senior Maddie Butterfield and BWHS senior Jensen Conner. Piper senior Jessica Ibarra was this year’s second-team all-league goalkeeper and MVHS junior Emma Wetzel utility player.

Lansing sophomore Brittany Valieant joined Martin as honorable mention forward, BLHS senior Raney Seaton was honorable mention midfielder and BLHS sophomore Marnie Pebley and Piper junior Riley Peterson made the team as defensive players. Ashley Miller, a Lansing junior, was honorable mention utility.

Baseball

Billy Kelley was the lone all-league selection for the Tonganoxie High baseball team.

Kelley, a junior, earned honorable mention honors for his play this year for THS, which finished the season 6-15.

Mill Valley, Basehor-Linwood, Piper and Bishop Ward had the most all-KVL selections with six each. Turner landed five on the list, Lansing four and Bonner Springs one.
