Summer in Tonganoxie: Library offers special themes for programs

By Shawn Linenberger - | Jun 18, 2015

There are plenty of activities in which to participate in Tonganoxie and the surrounding area and the library is a destination for many of those offerings.

The Tonganoxie Public Library, which is open seven days a week, has an extensive summer youth program.

Children’s programs are offered at 11 a.m. on Wednesdays, while teen programs get started at 4 p.m. Thursdays.

The children’s programming already had Mad Science on June 3 and Super Hero Boot Camp last Wednesday, June 10.

The overall theme of the summer program is Every Hero has a Story.

Today is Meet a Hero Day. Next Wednesday, June 24, children will expand on that theme when they will make their own super suits. July 8 is Martin City Melodrama. On July 11, children will build rockets.

And on July 22, juggler and comedian Brian Wendling will perform for the youths.

For the teens in the community, comic books have provided the theme.

Youths participated in a ComicCon event June 4. This Thursday, Will Stuck will lead a cartooning workshop.

On July 9, teens can participate in a do-it yourself comic book workshop.

And on July 23, youths will have gamer time.

June adult events

Adult programs also are being offered this summer.

Residents can learn later this month how to improve digital images, repair damaged photos and better understand contrast, brightness, hue and saturation. Library patrons can try out free software with hands-on experience.

The workshop will be 10 a.m.-noon June 27 at the library’s community room.

An author will be on hand the next day at the library.

Charley Green, author, entertainer and part-time cowboy, will be on hand at 1:30 p.m. June 28 at Tonganoxie Public Library, Third and Bury streets, to meet with library patrons.

Green has published a new western fiction novel, “The Reluctant Warrior, The Journey Begins.”

Library hours are 9 a.m.-8 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. The library is open 1-5 p.m. Sundays and is closed July 3 and 4 in observance of Independence Day.
