One for the books in Tonganoxie

By Staff | Jun 22, 2015

Organizers for this year’s Tonganoxie Library Run for the Books had an ambitious goal for the event — raise at least $10,000.

It was a number library board president David Frese said almost was picked jokingly, as if there were a chance that much money could be raised.

Perhaps in honor of the event’s longest race, the 10K, this year’s run and walk actually raised, well, more than 10K.

The event brought in about $10,700, Frese told the Tonganoxie City Council at its meeting Monday night.

“Thank you to the city for all they did,” Frese said. “Police were fabulous. They were everywhere … and thinking about things we hadn’t thought of.”

He also praised the fire department for its help, as well as City Administrator Nathan McCommon.

“I think the city administrator entertained 12 panicked emails from me in the last two weeks,” Frese said about last-minute preparations.

There were nearly 300 participants among the races and walk, along with about 50 volunteers.

“That’s great,” said Council Member Curtis Oroke. “That’s awesome.”

Jack Angell won the 10K run, while Corrie Jones turned in the top time overall in the 5K run. Gracie Drake took the top spot in the 5K walk at the Saturday morning event, which kicked off Tonganoxie Days.
