Basehor-Linwood ends Tonganoxie boys basketball season
Tonganoxie High boys basketball team held its own in the first half on the offensive end in a Class 4A Division I substate semifinal against undefeated Basehor-Linwood.
The Chieftains showed some fight in the first half against the Bobcats on Thursday in Piper.
THS trailed by just five after the first quarter and, although, BLHS pushed its lead to double digits in the second quarter, the Chieftains still were within striking distance at the half. The Bobcats led, 42-29, at halftime.
Tonganoxie coach Shawn Phillips said he told his team at half the goal was to claw back and get the deficit down to eight points in the third quarter.
The Bobcats had different plans.
Basehor-Linwood had its biggest offensive output in the third scoring 27 points on its way to an 81-46 victory.
The win pushed Basehor-Linwood to 21-0 and in to the substate finals Saturday against Piper or Sumner Academy.
THS ended the season at 4-17.
Tonganoxie had signs of life, including Tyler Novotney’s back-to-back three-pointers in the third quarter.
But BLHS answered quickly with a three of its own after Novtoney’s first trey and pushed down the court for another bucket after his second three.
Jared Sommers led THS in scoring with 10 points in his final game in a THS uniform.
Fellow seniors Brady Swedo scored nine and Greg DeVeau scored eight in the loss.
Basehor-Linwood’s Patrick Muldoon scored a game-high
In addition to Sommers, Swedo and DeVeau, Carl Hecht and Devan Smith played in their final games for THS.
