Annual St. Patrick’s Parade set for March 14

By Shawn Linenberger - | Mar 6, 2015

The 27th annual Tonganoxie St. Patrick’s Parade will have some added categories and cash prizes this year.

The parade will be 10 a.m. March 14 and will start at Fourth and Main streets and run west through downtown Tonganoxie.

Event organizer said local sponsors are donating $500 for various float prizes, including the best family float, a category that’s being brought back from earlier parades. The best overall float will win $200, while $75 each will go to the best family float and general float. The best entry by a boy, a girl and an animal will win $50 each. All winners will receive trophies as well.

New T-shirts in sizes up to 3XL are available for $10 each at The Downtown Drugstore, 516 E. Fourth Street.

Dated shirts from previous parades are being sold for $2 each.

Entry in the parade is free, but participants need to fill out entry form. The documents are available at The Downtown Drugstore and are due back at the business by 6 p.m. March 13.

Other festivities planned for the weekend event are a biscuits and gravy breakfast from 6-10 a.m. that morning at the Leavenworth County Fairgrounds 4-H Building. The event is a fundraiser for Tonganoxie American Legion Post 41. And, PEO Chapter AT will have its annual corned beef and Irish stew 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at the Tonganoxie United Methodist Church, 328 E. Fourth St.

The green stripe will make its return as well. Tonganoxie High School art students will paint a washable green stripe down the middle of the street, along with other decorating that city officials have approved. Breuer said that although there won’t be any bagpipers performing this year, recorded bagpipe music will be streaming from First State Bank and Trust. Tonganoxie’s Entrepreneurs Achieving Success Together group is organizing the event, while the City of Tonganoxie has earmarked $500 to assist in helping cover costs for the event.
