The Tonganoxie High girls soccer team’s scoring came in rapid fire Wednesday in its season opener against Bishop Ward at THS.

Tonganoxie scored three goals in fewer than 2 minutes on its way to a 7-0 shutout against the Cyclones.

The Chieftains scored their first goal with 29:13 left in the first half on senior Morgan Galvin’s shot.

Just more than a minute later, fellow senior Emily Williams scored, making it 2-0 with 28:04 left in the first half.

And with 27:21 left in the first half, junior Mackenzie Price scored.

Just before halftime, sophomore Joanna Filbert chipped in with a goal with 1:37 left before intermission and the Chieftains had a comfortable 4-0 lead.

In the second half, Price dropped in two more goals — just more than 2 minutes apart — and THS increased its lead to 6-0.

Price scored at the 33:42 and 31:22 marks and finished the game with a hat trick, as she scored three goals total. Sophomore Amanda Martin scored with 23:41 left in the game for the team’s seventh goal.

THS coach Justin Seever said his team started the season well on a windy and cold afternoon on its home field.

“I was very impressed,” Seever said. “I feel like we haven’t covered a lot of things yet this preseason, but we looked more in tune this early than my previous four seasons. We took 45 shots, which shows we were in control.”

The team is in action next Thursday and Friday against Spring Hill and Lansing respectively. Varsity games start at 4 p.m. both nights.

Seever said he was “very happy with game one and looking forward to getting better every day.”

The victory improved THS to 1-0 on the season.
