Rocky road for Tonganoxie High softball

By Shawn Linenberger - | May 6, 2015

The Tonganoxie High softball team hit a bit of a wall in its two doubleheaders last week.

The Chieftains rolled in with an 8-0 record but dropped both doubleheaders, falling to 8-4 on the season.

THS faced fellow undefeated squad Piper on April 29 in Kansas City, Kan.

As has been the storyline throughout the year, Tonganoxie provided plenty of offense.

Piper jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first game and eventually was up, 6-3, heading into the top of the fourth. That’s when the Chieftains put together four runs of their own and actually had a 7-6 lead.

Unfortunately for THS, Piper would answer. The Pirates scored four in the fourth and three in the fifth on their way to a 13-7 victory. Halley Calovich went 5-for-5 from the plate in the loss.

In the second game, THS couldn’t overcome some big Piper innings.

The teams were tied at 3 heading into the bottom of the third, but Piper put seven runs on the board in the bottom of the third. A four-run sixth for THS cut into the Piper lead, but the Pirates again answered with five runs in the bottom of the sixth on their way to a 16-7 victory.

“They’re a very fundamentally sound hitting team from top to bottom,” said THS coach Stephanie Wittman. “We hit the ball well, we just couldn’t string the hits together.”

SPRING HILL SWEEPS THS

Tonganoxie just didn’t have the answers to Spring Hill’s bats Friday in a nonconference doubleheader at Spring Hill.

The Chieftains jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first game, but Spring Hill answered with three big innings. THS scored three in the sixth, but it wasn’t enough in an 11-4 defeat. Mackenzie Sample had 2 hits against the Broncos in the first game. Both teams had some miscues defensively, as THS committed 6 errors and Spring Hill 5.

In the second game, another big inning was the difference. SHHS scored 5 runs in the bottom of the third on its way to the 7-2. Reagan Bennett had 2 hits and 2 RBI in the losing effort.

Tonganoxie traveled Tuesday to Basehor-Linwood for a doubleheader against the Bobcats that took place after The Mirror’s deadline. THS is back home Thursday for a 4 p.m. doubleheader against Mill Valley.
