THS baseball team scores late for victory against Holton

By Shawn Linenberger - | May 13, 2015

Late-inning heroics have caused some heartbreaking finishes for the Tonganoxie High baseball team this year.

On Monday, the Chieftains turned the tables.

Tonganoxie jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning with runs from Colten Weaver and Connor Wentz-Hall. Weaver scored again in the fourth on a sacrifice fly to center field from Wentz-Hall.

Then came the sixth inning and a Holton rally.

The Wildcats scored three runs in their half of the sixth and the game was tied at 3.

THS has built strong leads a number of times this year, but some late-inning rallies by their opponents have thwarted more victories in the win column.

In the seventh inning Monday, the Chieftains drew up a different script.

Brady Swedo led off the inning with a double and two batters later Thomas Minor knocked in Swedo with a single. That put the Chieftains up, 4-3, and they held on for the victory.

The game originally was to be played at Holton, but the Wildcats’ field wasn’t playable.

The game was moved to Tonganoxie and the Leavenworth County Fairgrounds.

Because the game originally was to be played in Holton, HHS was the designated home team and Tonganoxie the visitors.

THS will try to finish up a suspended game against Bishop Ward that is tied in the late innings. The game was supposed to be resumed last week, but inclement weather postponed it. The teams currently are scheduled to resume that game Thursday in Kansas City, Kan.

The postseason begins early next week with regional play.
