Tonganoxie Elementary School wins state title in Music Memory

Tonganoxie Elementary School has a state championship in Music Memory. TES sent two teams to the Music Memory contest April 22 at Kansas State University. The “Tonganoxie South” team led by TES teacher Amy Jones won the state contest this year. The squad won the contest against 17 other teams, including the “Tonganoxie North” team led by fellow TES teacher Wanda Haney. Haney had a team that also won the contest in 2012.
Linwood girl’s passion for rodeo continues to grow

It only took a family trip to the Shrine Rodeo to set Emmie Noyes on a new path. The Linwood girl was 8 years old when she visited the Leavenworth County Fairgrounds in Tonganoxie to watch the Shrine Rodeo. It was that year the horse “bug” first bit her.

With some 145 students in the Class of 2015 looking on Saturday in the THS gymnasium, THS principal Mark Farrar recalled his high school graduation in 1993 and his mother telling him of her 25-year class reunion at the time. “Holycow! That’s an eternity,” Farrar told the class, explaining his reaction at the time.
Tonganoxie High grad on Belmont Dean’s List

Paige Lauri of Tonganoxie has been named to the spring Dean’s List at Belmont University. Eligibility is based on a minimum course load of 12 hours and a quality grade-point average of 3.5 with no grade below a C at the Nashville, Tenn., university.

Free cancer screening to be offered May 30 in Tonganoxie

Masonic Lodge No. 190 will host a free cancer screening before the Tonganoxie Summer Kick-Off on May 30. The screening will be 10 a.m.-1 p.m. at Tonganoxie High School, 404 E. U.S. Highway 24-40, and is open to the public.
Salina Airport Authority Board approves lease for business

The Salina Airport Authority Board has approved a lease for airport space for a soil erosion business that could bring 13 full-time jobs to the area by June.

Tonganoxie American Legion Post 41 will place small American flags at the graves of those who served in the military. Legion members will place flags in Tonganoxie cemeteries. The post also will have Memorial Day services at 2 p.m. Monday at Hubbel Hill Cemetery. Retired Col. Gary Sanford will speak at the ceremony.
Kansas Senate to consider tax increases to close budget gap

The Republican-dominated Kansas Senate is considering a plan to raise taxes to close a projected budget shortfall, with GOP Gov. Sam Brownback saying he isn’t drawing “very clear lines” for lawmakers who are split over reversing one of his major economic initiatives.
House approves bill upping secretary of state’s power
