It couldn’t have been much closer of a loss for the Tonganoxie High soccer team in the Class 4-3-2-1A playoffs last week.

THS and Maranatha Christian Academy needed double overtime and then a shootout to determine the winner May 19 at the THS soccer complex.

The Eagles won, 4-3, on penalty kicks, advancing in the playoffs and ending Tonganoxie’s season in the first round.

The loss dropped THS to 6-8-2 on the season.

MCA advanced Thursday to face De Soto, the No. 2 seed in the Northeast Regional. DHS won, 1-0, and improved to 13-4-1. MCA ended its season at 6-10.

THS was the No. 7 seed, while Maranatha Christian Academy was the No. 10 seed.

Top-seeded Bishop Miege also advanced past the second round after defeating No. 9 Baldwin (7-11), 5-1. Bishop Miege improved to 14-4.

No. 3 Spring Hill advanced with a 2-1 decision against No. 6 Bonner Springs (10-8). SHHS now is 13-5 on the year.

Piper prevented the top four teams from advancing past the first two rounds.

The Pirates, a No. 5 seed, defeated No. 12 Bishop Ward (2-14-1), 10-0, and then got past No. 4 Sumner Academy (10-5-1), 4-1, in the second round. PHS improved to 11-6.

Advancing past the first two rounds in the South Central Region were No. 1 McPherson (14-3-1), No. 2 Hays-Thomas More Prep-Marian/Ellis (12-3-1), No. 11 Wichita-Trinity (6-11) and No. 4 Topeka Hayden (13-5).

Quaterfinal games took place after The Mirror’s deadline on Tuesday.

The Bishop Miege-Piper winner takes on the De Soto-Spring Hill winner, while the McPherson-Wichita Trinity winner takes on TMP-Marian/Ellis-Topeka Hayden winner.

Those four winners will play in the state semifinals Friday at McPherson College. Winners will play in the state championship Saturday.

As for Tonganoxie, the Chieftains just missed out on securing another winning season.

Playing in their final game last week for THS were seniors Sophie Breedlove, Megan Briggs, Emily Williams, Morgan Galvin, Brenna Kietzmann and Sarah Ahart.
