Tonganoxie places in handful of events at state track

The Tonganoxie High boys team was able to place in three events in Class 4A in Saturday’s state track and field championships.

Dylan Staatz gave Tonganoxie its first points of the state meet on the boys side. The junior placed seventh Friday in the long in the triple jump. Staatz’s best jump of the day was 42-7. Colby junior Matthew Pieper won the meet with a distance of 44-6.75.

Senior Devan Smith had THS’ highest finish. He placed fifth in the long jump (21-1.5) in a tightly contested event. Wichita Trinity senior Tyler Burns took first with a 21-8.5 leap, the same distance as senior Hunter Knoblauch from Andale. Burns next best distance was better than Knoblauch’s, so Andale took first and Knoblauch second. Bishop Ward senior Augusta Grace placed third at 21-8. Staatz placed 14th (19-4.25).

LeeRoi Johnson, who erupted for a personal best throw at regionals, finished strong with a seventh-place finish at state. The freshman had a top throw of 147-2. Louisburg senior Connor McMullen won the event with a 173-1 throw.

Senior Levi Koch placed 14th with a 149-4 heave in the javelin. Andale junior Jeffery Ast won gold with a 193-3 throw, while teammate Luke Walstead, a senior, placed second (190-3).

Tonganoxie’s 4×800 team had the highest finish for THS at this year’s state track and field championships.

The Chieftains placed fourth with a time of 10:11.8, just behind Hays, which came in at 10:10.58.

Baldwin won the event with a time of 10:03.03.

Tonganoxie finished tied for 29th with eight points. Andale won the team title with 68.5 points. Bishop Miege placed second (47) and Baldwin third (46). Piper was the top Kaw Valley League team, as the Pirates placed 19th with 15 points.

Girls 4×800 nabs 4th

Freshmen Emma Campbell and Mia Bond, sophomore Emily Chambers and senior Tressa Walker made up the relay team.

Jessica Minear placed seventh in her final state meet. The senior scored 2 points for THS thanks to a leap of 34-5.75. Independence senior won the event with a 37-4 mark.

Tonganoxie’s 4×400 relay team placed 11th in the prelims. The squad of freshmen Mia Bond and Sierra Staatz, as well as seniors Kourtni Freemyer and Tressa Walker. Independence won the meet with a 4:02.7 time in the finals.

Senior Summer Cerny finished 14th in the prelims with a time of 17.43 seconds. Leah Reichenberger, an Andale senior, won the event with a 15.21 time in the finals.

Senior Jackie Whitledge also finished 14th in the long jump with a distance of 15-9.25. Buhler senior Alexandra Keller finished first with a 17-11.25 jump.

THS finished tied for 25th with seven points at this year’s meet.

Baldwin won the team title with 85 points. Independence placed second with 67 and Andale third with 61.

Basehor-Linwood was the highest-finishing Kaw Valley League team. The Bobcats were 18th with 14 points.

Baldwin continues its recent dominance in girls track. The Bulldogs have won five of the last six 4A team titles, including three straight.
