A second mural in Tonganoxie will be changing the downtown landscape a bit more. Kelly Poling, a muralist from Chillicothe, Mo., painted a mural featuring books and an image of the late Dr. Phil Stevens in September on the west side of the Stevens physician’s office building. That mural creates part of a border in the downtown pocket park.

It was a great start for the Tonganoxie High soccer team in its Class 4-1A regional playoff game Oct. 27 at Chieftain Park. THS, the No. 5 seed in the northeast regional, led No. 8 Kansas City Christian, 2-0, in the first half.

The Tonganoxie High girls cross country team placed 11th in its second trip to the Class 4A state meet Saturday in Wamego. The Chieftains had 229 points. Baldwin won the meet with 45 points. Andover Central placed second (66) and Wichita-Trinity third (102).

In a game played in wet and muddy conditions, fumbles plagued the Tonganoxie Chieftains in a 27-8 loss in their season finale to the Basehor-Linwood Bobcats. The Chieftains lost five fumbles and threw one interception, which led to all of the Bobcats’ 27 points. “It was a muddy night, so we knew it was going to be a grind-it-out game,” head coach Al Troyer said. “You’re going to turn the ball over.”

Tonganoxie High advanced to Day 2 of the Class 4A Division I state volleyball tournament, thanks in large part to a rally for the ages. No. 4 THS had won its first set against No. 5 Andale, 25-17, but was down 16-1 against the Indians in the second set. “That was a pretty good little chunk of change right there,” said THS coach Tiffany Parker. A 15-point deficit certainly is, but from there on out, the Chieftains were money.
