Tonganoxie teams land several on all-Kaw Valley League teams

Tonganoxie High fall sports teams experienced many triumphs collectively during the season.

Now that the majority of fall team seasons have concluded, many individual student-athletes also have been acknowledged for their efforts.

The Kaw Valley League announced its all-conference selections last week, with Tonganoxie having several selections across the board.

Here’s a closer look at THS selections in the various sports:

Cross country

The Tonganoxie High cross country boys and girls teams had a combined eight runners earn all-league honors.

Selections are based on how runners finished at the KVL meet last month.

The boys team finished second at the league meet. Ethan Phillips and Drew Cook were first-team selections, while Dylan Staatz, Chandler Hamman and Carter Kietzman were second-team selections. The boys team placed second overall at the league meet last month at Shawnee Mission Park.

Mia Bond was a first-team selection, with Alyssa Scott and Sierra Staatz making second team for the girls squad. The girls finished fourth at league.

At regionals, the THS boys missed out on a team berth at state, but Ethan Phillips advanced as an individual runner.

The girls finished third at regionals and qualified for their second straight state berth as a team.

Football

The Chieftain football team had four players earn all-district honors in five categories.

THS sophomore Samuel Sigourney was a second-team all-KVL selection at interior lineman, while Dalton Trimble earned all-conference honors as a wide receiver and defensive back. The senior earned honorable mention distinctions at both positions.

On the defensive line, sophomore LeeRoi Johnson earned second-team honors as a defensive lineman, while sophomore Zac Morgan earned a second-team nod as a defensive back.

Tonganoxie finished the 2015 campaign at 3-6.

Mill Valley led the league with 14 first-team selections. The Jaguars are 9-1 heading into Class 5A sectionals Friday against Pittsburg, which also is 9-1 on the season.

Soccer

Tonganoxie finished a successful season with a 12-5 record and landed four players on the all-league team.

Alex Kroll and Tyler Novotney were first-team selections, while Dylan Kroll and Logan Williams earned second-team accolades.

Alex Kroll earned first-team honors as a goalie and Novotney as a forward.

Dylan Kroll was on the second team as a defensive player and Williams as a midfielder.

Mill Valley led the KVL with seven selections overall. The Jags went 12-6, falling in the second round of the 5A playoffs, 1-0, in double overtime to Blue Valley Southwest.

THS lost in the opening round of the 4-1A playoffs, 3-2, to Kansas City Christian.

Volleyball

The fourth-place team in Class 4A Division I had three selections to the all-KVL team.

Tonganoxie senior Lauren Jackson was an all-league selection, as was junior Emily Hummelgaard.

Sophomore Lauren Willson was an honorable mention selection.

Lansing and Basehor-Linwood led the league in selections with four each.

BLHS was a 4A Division I substate runner-up and finished the season with a 26-11 record.

Lansing went to state with a 33-4 record, but couldn’t advance out of pool play at the 5A state tournament.

Tonganoxie finished the season 29-14 with a fourth-place finish at the 4A D-I state tournament Oct. 24 in Salina’s Bicentennial Center.
