Tonganoxie citywide garage sales, Leavenworth County cleanup events Saturday

By Shawn Linenberger - | Oct 1, 2015

Bargain hunters should have plenty of opportunities to find deals this weekend.

Tonganoxie will have its citywide garage sales this Saturday.

Residents are encouraged to have their sales throughout the community on Saturday, though some have been known to get started on Fridays each year.

Dates historically has been selected, one in the fall and one in the spring, for the citywide sale.

The Mirror offered classified ads for $15 each for residents to promote their sales. A map accompanying the sales appears in today’s classified section. Garage sale advertisements are listed by zones that correspond to the city map.

Though no organization officially sponsors the event, The Tonganoxie Chamber of Commerce led the event for some years. Now, officials at City Hall generally pick dates in the spring and fall and encourage residents to have sales on those dates.

Clean-up event Saturday

All Leavenworth County residents (not including businesses) can dispose of unwanted household items for free during the Leavenworth County Community Clean-Up event Saturday. The event will take place from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Leavenworth County Transfer Station, 24967 136th St. in Lansing.

Items that can be dropped off include:

• Construction items

• Tires (limit of five)

• Brush

• Electronics

• Household hazardous waste

• Documents for shredding (from 8 a.m.-noon)

To drop off items, residents must show a valid identification with an address in Leavenworth County. For more information, call 913-727-2858.

Upcoming activities

A handful of events are planned for Tonganoxie this month.

• Genesis Christian Academy will have its Fall Fest from 6-9 p.m. Friday at the school.

The event will include food, games and a large auction to benefit the school. A pie baking contest and a kiss-the-pig event also are planned. Students started bringing in change Sept. 21 as a way to “vote” for the teacher they want to kiss a pig during Fall Fest. The teacher that garners the most money will get to place a smacker on the pig.

• The American Legion will have a benefit gun show Saturday and Sunday at the Leavenworth County Fairgrounds.

• The downtown Tonganoxie Spooktacular event will be Oct. 30. Children can visit businesses for treats and roam Fourth Street for various games.
