Lansing sinks Tonganoxie soccer with overtime goal

By Shawn Linenberger - | Oct 7, 2015

Tonganoxie High struck first against Lansing in a Kaw Valley League clash Monday at Lansing, but LHS finished with a second-half goal and then an overtime score for the 2-1 victory.

Tonganoxie senior Tyler Novotney scored for the Chieftains in the first half, but the Lions answered just moments into the second half.

LHS scored 2 minutes into the overtime for the KVL soccer win. The loss dropped the Chieftains to 10-3 on the season.

THS coach Brian Kroll said the team played well against the Lions, but can carry the game experience into the home stretch of the season.

“If we play like we played tonight, we should be able to beat anybody,” Kroll said. “Just unfortunately we didn’t get the ball in the net more. We did everything tonight except outscore them.”

The Chieftains certainly were in a good spot heading into halftime with the one-goal lead, but LHS struck quickly after breaks, first at intermission and then after regulation.

“What you do in practice you will repeat in a game,” Kroll said, noting the team was having a hard time staying focused at times in practice and staying on task. “It’s a good loss. It’s one that causes us to check ourselves and regain focus.”

THS shuts out Perry

Tonganoxie swept Perry-Lecompton in the regular season with Thursday’s 3-0 victory at Chieftain Park.

THS won the first meeting, 10-0, earlier this season in a game called at halftime because of the mercy rule.

This time, the teams were scoreless at the half. But second-half goals from Dawson Jones, Gage Sommers and Logan Williams helped the Chieftains avoid the upset.

“All things considered, when they’ve got nine people inside the box to defend us and keep us from the mercy rule … it was a brilliant strategy,” Kroll said. “They did everything they could to get it to an 80-minute game.

Kroll said his team did some great things and was strong with communication and ball movement.

The Chieftains look to start another winning streak with play Thursday in Kansas City, Kan., against Bishop Ward.

THS won the first meeting, 2-0, in a lightning-shortened match at Chieftain Park.

Tonganoxie finishes out the regular season against private schools.

After Ward, the team heads Tuesday to Atchison to take on Maur Hill Mount Academy and then is home Oct. 22 for a Senior Night match against Immaculata at Chieftain Park.

Regionals start Oct. 27.
