Pleasant day for a run for Tonganoxie cross country team

The 1-2 punch continues for Tonganoxie High cross country teams, though the squads just missed sweeping the Pleasant Ridge Invitational on Thursday near Easton.

THS, with a score of 39, won the boys meet by 20 points, while the girls placed second as a team, just one point behind Basehor-Linwood.

The Chieftain boys again ran well as a team, ranging from second place to 14th in team scoring (the top five finishers on each team count toward the team schedule).

Drew Cook won silver with a time of 16 minutes, 38.32 seconds, with Ethan Phillips about 20 seconds behind in fourth place. Dylan Staatz placed eighth (17:23.45), Carter Kietzman 12th (17:34.23) and Chandler Hamman 14th (17:46.08).

McLouth finished fourth with 97 points.

Braeden Pfau (ninth, 17:26.83), Tristan Funk (11th, 17:28.7) and Jordan Butler (15th, 18:01.88) were top finishers for the Bulldogs.

In the girls race, THS finished with 45 points, just behind Basehor-Linwood, which scored 44.

Mia Bond led the Chieftain girls with a fourth-place finish and a 20:46.04 time. Alyssa Scott placed seventh with a 21:32.22 and Sierra Staatz nabbed 12th with a 22:00.73 time. Hope Creten was right behind her in 13th (22:10.18). Emma Campbell finished the day in 17th (22:36.41) and Erin Williams 19th (22:53.9).

McLouth did not field a full team, though Ceara Funk finished in the top 10. She placed ninth with a time of 21:39.22.

Tonganoxie now will get its final tune-up before the postseason. The Chieftains will compete starting at 3:45 p.m. Thursday in the Kaw Valley League Meet at Shawnee Mission Park.

McLouth will compete in the Northeast Kansas League Meet at 4 p.m. Thursday at Rim Rock Farm between Larwence and McLouth.

Regionals will follow for both programs on Oct. 24, Tonganoxie in a Class 4A regional in Baldwin City and McLouth a 2A regional in Belleville.

Teams with THS in Baldwin City are Atchison, Baldwin, Basehor-Linwood, Bishop Miege, Bishop Ward, Piper, De Soto, Eudora, HAyden, Holton, Jeff West, Ottawa, Santa Fe Trail, Spring Hill and Sumner Academy.

Republic County will be the host for McLouth’s 2A regional. Other teams there include Bennington, Valley Heights, Canton-Galva, Herington, Hillsboro, Horton and Jackson Heights.
