October 21, 2015

The Tonganoxie High cross country teams turned in some strong finishes at Thursday’s Kaw Valley League Meet at Shawnee Mission Park.

The boys team came in second against a talented Mill Valley squad that placed runners in four of the top five individual spots. Tonganoxie’s Ethan Phillips took that fourth spot, while Drew Cook placed sixth. Phillips finished the race in 17 minutes, 7.78 seconds, while Cook was at 17:08.46.

In the girls varsity race, Tonganoxie finished with 87 points, the same tally as Basehor-Linwood. Those teams finished behind Mill Valley (28) and Lansing (38).

Mia Bond led the way for Tonganoxie with a fifth-place overall finish (20:17.28), while four of her fellow teammates finished in a tight pack. Alyssa Scott, Sierra Staatz, Hope Creten and Erin Williams placed 19-22 within a span of about 23 seconds.

Tonganoxie will enter the postseason Saturday with a Class 4A regional in Baldwin City. Qualifying runners then will advance to state Oct. 31 in Wamego.
