Tonganoxie soccer squad to send off seniors

By Shawn Linenberger - | Oct 21, 2015

The Tonganoxie High soccer team fought back against Maur Hill Mount Academy last week, but couldn’t overcome a 3-2 halftime deficit.

Maur Hill got up, 2-0, before Tonganoxie responded with goals from Tyler Novotney and Chandler Caldwell.

The Junior Ravens, though, knocked in the deciding goal before halftime. The teams didn’t score in the second half and Maur Hill Mount Academy picked up the victory.

The loss dropped THS to 11-4 on the season.

That was Oct. 13. THS coach Brian Kroll had the Chieftains take a break from practice with fall break, so Monday was the team’s first time back on a field since the middle of last week.

“It was a chance to just kind of regain focus and understand what we’re going to do,” Kroll said. “It’s one more game and then it’s all or nothing. It’s win and continue or lose and we’re done.”

Before the squad got back on the field, the Chieftains had a fundraiser at the beginning of their break.

Tonganoxie teammates gathered for bowling event at Royal Crest Lanes in Lawrence for the squad’s main fundraiser of the year.

“It gives them a chance to let their hair down and have a good time,” Kroll said.

THS finishes off the regular season with a home match Thursday against Immaculata.

Junior varsity will start at 4:30 p.m., with Senior Night festivities set to start about 6 p.m. and the varsity game at 6:15 p.m. at Chieftain Park against the Raiders.

On Monday, Kroll met with seniors in preparation for the upperclassmen’s final regular season match. During the meeting, the players decided which teachers they would invite to join them on the field. It’s an opportunity for players to recognize teachers who have mentors to them during the past four years.

Kroll said he reiterated during the meeting the importance of the seniors leading the squad into the postseason.

Tonganoxie will learn Saturday morning what teams it might play in the postseason.

THS is in one of three Class 4-1A northeast regionals. The postseason begins Monday.
