By Shawn Linenberger - | Sep 23, 2015

Tonganoxie High School still had candidates in a convertible as part of homecoming festivities Friday.

Candidates Dalton Trimble and Megan Zerrer rolled onto the THS gymnasium floor in a battery-operated miniature Cadillac convertible.

With potential inclement weather on the way Friday, school officials postponed the downtown homecoming parade until Monday.

Other candidates walked out onto the THS gymnasium floor before Trimble and Zerrer, slowly but surely, made their way to center court in the miniature car.

The THS cheerleaders and Chieftain Stars dance teams performed and the various fall sports teams were recognized.

The rain held off at the football game Friday night for the homecoming coronation. The ceremony took place on the Beatty Field track. After all candidates and their parents were introduced, Tyler Novotney and Emma DeMaranville were named this year’s royalty.

Other candidates this year were Brooke Bolon, Halley Calovich, Emily Eberth, Sierra Graham, Sophia Wetta, Nicole Zerrer, Luke Aitkens, Dawson Jones, Ethan Phillips, Dylan Staatz, Grant Swearngin and Dalton Trimble.

At halftime, the THS Marching Chieftains also performed in front of the home crowd on the track, while this year’s Tonganoxie USD 464 Education Foundation Hall of Fame inductees also were recognized on the track.

Lansing spoiled the homecoming fun Friday night with a 35-6 victory against the THS football team. THS now is 2-1 on the season.

Monday’s parade was the official end to homecoming festivities.

Last week, students dressed up to various themed days that centered around some type of candy or other sweet treat.

Sept. 15 was Sweet-tart Sweetheart Day (famous couples), Sept. 22 was Double Mint Day (twin day), Wednesday, Sept. 23, was Nerds Day (brainy day), Thursday was Baby Ruth Day (blast from the past day) and Friday was Hot Tamale Day. Freshmen and juniors were to wear white and sophomores and seniors were encouraged to wear red on Friday.

This year’s dance theme was “Pour Some Sugar on Me” The dance took place Saturday night at the Chieftain Room on the THS east campus.

On Sept. 15, the community gathered for a bonfire in the field southwest of Beatty Field. Faculty and students had a “hot dog eating contest” involving little smokies before high school boys wore dresses for a beauty pageant of sorts. Faculty also did a dance routine for students and the THS band performed.

On Monday, students rode team, class, club and organization floats through downtown Tonganoxie. Though the skies again were overcast, the parade was able to take place. Seniors for fall sports and band were introduced, with representatives from each speaking about theirs seasons so far. The cheer and drill teams again performed as well.
