The Tonganoxie High baseball team has played in some exciting games in the season’s early going.

THS, which is preparing for a Thursday doubleheader on the road in Lansing, is 2-2 on the season.

The Chieftains have scored 21 runs and allowed 20. Last Wednesday, March 30, Tonganoxie fell in eight innings to Jeff West on the road, 6-5, before bouncing back for an 8-5 victory in the nightcap.

That contest followed a season-opening doubleheader in which the Chieftains fell, 8-5, to Bishop Ward in the first game and bounced back for victory in the second game, 3-1.

Through four games, Tonganoxie is batting .308 as a team with 32 hits (27 singles and 5 doubles).

Billy Kelley leads the team in hitting so far with a .556 batting average. Kelley has 5 hits, 5 walks and 4 RBI. Other top hitters are Tyler Novotney (.375), Dante Nelson (.357) and Jordan Woods (.333).

Kelley has two of the team’s RBI, while Brett George, Cody Knight and Nelson each have an RBI.

Dominik Novotney has been hit by three pitches already and Jordan Woods and Tyler Novotney lead the team with six runs each.

Tonganoxie is back home next week after its doubleheader Thursday against Lansing. THS plays a 4 p.m. doubleheader Tuesday against Bonner Springs at the Leavenworth County Fairgrounds.

It’s back on the road April 14 in Shawnee for a doubleheader against Mill Valley.

The postseason this season will run through Tonganoxie, as THS has been named one of eight hosts for Class 4A Division I regionals.

THS will host Basehor-Linwood, Bishop Miege and Sumner Academy starting May 17 at the Leavenworth County Fairgrounds.

Girls soccer loses

The Tonganoxie High girls soccer team wasn’t able to avoid a shutout in a home match Monday at Chieftain Park.

Mill Valley blanked THS, 10-0, on the Chieftains’ home field.

Tonganoxie will look to regroup with another home date Friday against Olathe North.

Junior varsity begins at 4 p.m. and varsity at 6 p.m.
