Some 300 students attend Tonganoxie High School prom

By Shawn Linenberger - | Apr 19, 2016

Tonganoxie High School juniors and seniors could be spotted here and there Saturday in Tonganoxie and Lawrence.

With prom taking place Saturday night in Lawrence, students were gathering for photos in advance with their friends at various venues, including VFW Park in Tonganoxie, which traditionally has been a popular spot for prom attendees.

Students then were on their own for dinner before prom. One group of 24 THS friends dined at the Bird Dog in the Oread Hotel before heading up Oread Avenue to the Kansas Union on the Kansas University campus.

According to Tonganoxie High School teacher Jean Willson, about 300 students attended this year’s junior-senior prom at the Kansas Union Ballroom.

This year’s theme was Festival of Lights, with DJ Ty Brown providing music for the evening.

Prom king candidates were Calvin Fletcher, Luke Aitkens, Zach Berry, Dawson Jones, Billy Kelley and Dylan Staatz. Queen candidates were Sophia Wetta, Leah Bartels, Kaitlin Hall, Mackenzie Price, Brynlee Robbins and Nicole Zerrer.

Fletcher and Wetta were crowned this year’s royalty.

While at prom, Mark Greathouse Photography captured photos of all the prom couples and groups, while students also were able to take some photo booth photos thanks to PicFavors Photo Booth.

After prom concluded, students headed back to Tonganoxie for the after-prom party on the THS east campus.

Some of the activities offered at after-prom were mechanical bull-riding, blow-up bounce houses and slides, a blow-up dunk game and card games. Food and refreshments also were provided at the after-prom party.

Graduation is May 14

With prom comes the end of the school year and, of course, graduation.

This year’s commencement exercises will be 7 p.m. May 14 in the THS gymnasium.

Other activities leading up to graduation that week are the Tonganoxie Middle School Night of the Stars May 11 and the THS Senior Awards Night on May 12.

The last day of school will be May 18.
