Furious rally helps Chieftain baseball split with turner
The Tonganoxie High baseball team bounced back in exciting fashion Thursday in Kansas City, Kan.
The Chieftains, down 8-4 heading into the final inning, plated five runs in the top of the seventh and pulled ahead 9-8. THS held on in Turner’s half of the seventh for the 1-run victory.
Tonganoxie’s thrilling comeback win came after a tough loss in game 1.
It was almost a turnabout move after the first game.
Turner jumped out to a 4-1 lead after the first and then led, 5-1, after two innings. THS, though responded with plenty of its own offensive firepower, scoring five in the third and three in the fourth. The Chieftains tacked on yet another run in the fifth and had a 10-5 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth.
The Bears, though, amassed 6 runs in the bottom of the fifth and took an 11-10 lead. Turner added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth and held on for the 12-10 victory. Tonganoxie had 10 runs on 17 hits and 3 errors, while Turner scored 12 runs on 13 hits and committed 2 errors.
Logan Woods and Cody Knight each had 3 hits, while Billy Kelley and Woods had 2 RBI.
Woods also fanned 5 Turner batters through six innings of work.
In the second game, Tonganoxie scored 9 runs on 8 hits, while committing 2 errors. Turner scored 8 runs on 8 hits and also had 2 miscues.
Dominick Novotney had 3 RBI and 2 walks offensively. Ty Gambrill and Jordan Brown each had 2 hits.
On the mound, Tyler Novotney pitched 7 innings and struck out 8 Turner batters.
The doubleheader split moves Tonganoxie to 5-9 on the season.
The squad was set to play Piper on Tuesday, but it took place after The Mirror’s print deadline. THS next will play in a tournament at CommunityAmerica Ballpark in Kansas City, Kan. The Chieftains open the tournament with a 2:30 p.m. game Thursday against Holton. The team will then play Friday and Saturday, with times varying based on whether they advance through the winners bracket on the consolation side.
Bobcats sweep THS
Basehor-Linwood swept Tonganoxie on April 19. The Chieftains trailed, 2-0, heading into the fifth, but 5 runs in the top of that inning had the Bobcats cruising, 7-0.
It was 8-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth when THS added a couple runs and made it an 8-2 game. But BLHS answered with 2 more in the top of the seventh and took game 1.
Tonganoxie had a 3-1 lead in the second game, but a 4-run fifth put Basehor-Linwood up, 5-3. THS chipped away with its own run in the sixth and trailed, just 5-4.
But again, the Bobcats had an answer. With two more runs in the top of the seventh, BLHS was able to hang on for the 7-4 victory.
