MIdnight run for Tonganoxie cross country spreads to other fall sports for first-practice tradition

The midnight madness is catching on in Tonganoxie. The Tonganoxie High cross country team first started the tradition of having the first practice of the new season at 12:01 a.m. on the first day Kansas high school teams can practice, per Kansas State High School Activities Association rules.

Leavenworth County Emergency Management Service personnel can be the first to a scene when a 911 call is made. When that situation arises in the case of a victim trapped in a burning vehicle, Leavenworth County EMS members will have more training in helping the person out of the vehicle.
Tonganoxie USD 464 holds line on mill rate; Smith resigns from board

The Tonganoxie School Board approved, 5-0, the proposed 2016-17 budget for USD 464. Superintendent Chris Kleidosty’s proposal calls for a budget with a slightly lower mill rate. The 2016-17 proposed budget, which is being published in the legals portion of the B section, calls for a mill rate of 60.398. That’s a slight drop from the actual 2015-16 rate of 60.402. A mill is $1 in taxes for every $1,000 in property valuation.

The new Tonganoxie City Hall and Tonganoxie Police Station are open for business. Both departments opened Monday, with City Hall in the former Post Office (most recently Tan Time) in the 500 block of Fourth Street.

Tonganoxie will have new representation on the county and state levels. Longtime county employee Doug Smith won the Leavenworth County Commission Third District primary, while Jim Karleskint won the Kansas House District 42 race in the Aug. 2 primary.
