Tonganoxie Public Library picks winning name for humongous teddy bear

By Shawn Linenberger - | Feb 2, 2016

To have a name or not to have a name?

The question has been answered.

The gigantic stuffed animal at Tonganoxie Public Library is now known as Shakesbear, a take, of course, on Shakespeare.

Library officials selected Katelyn Sanders’ winning name last month from roughly 100 entries.

The two runner-up names for the teddy bear were Roosevelt and Boris.

For her winning entry, Sanders received a replica of the bear, which was donated to the library late last year. The furry friend resides in the children’s section of the library.

The naming contest lasted for several weeks and concluded at the end of December.

Adult winter reading

The library’s adult winter reading program started Monday.

The program will run until Feb. 29. This year’s theme is “Travel Through 150 Years of Tonganoxie History.”

Patrons can register online at tonganoxielibrary.org or by visiting the library at Third and Bury streets. People involved in the program will be given a bingo card with various tasks to complete.

Weekly prizes will be given away, and each completed bingo card earns the reader chance to win the secret grand prize.

Bingo tasks include liking the library on Facebook, attending a historical society meeting or event, renewing a library card, checking out a cookbook and attending a library board meeting. Library organizers also are looking for sponsors for the event, so anyone interested in sponsorship can contact the library at 913-845-3281.

Oscar contest

Patrons who can correctly predict the most Oscar winners will receive a couple prizes from the library.

This year’s Academy Awards will be Feb. 28, so those interested in participating should submit their predictions before then. The library has forms with all of the Oscar categories.

The contest winner will receive AMC movie tickets and a goodie bag.

Adult art series

The adult art series is the first three Mondays in February.

Though the first night was earlier this week, two more remain. The series runs from 6 to 8 p.m. the next two Mondays. Activities include folk art crafts, linoleum printing and card making.

Bingo winners

Tonganoxie Public Library is continuing its adult bingo in the new year.

Winners Jan. 18 were Annabelle Welsh (2), Patty Szini (2), Susan Moore (3), John Fuhlhage, Doris Anderson Helen McBroom, Carlos Cole, Emil Wiley, Katie Welsh, John Neyhart, Patrick Rowand and Joyce Cole.

Blackout winners were Rosie Oelschlaeger and McBroom.

Adult bingo takes place from 1 to 3 p.m. the first and third Mondays of each month in the library’s community room.
