HTK Architects gave the Tonganoxie City Council a look at plans for a new City Hall and police station at Monday’s regular council meeting.
Marissa Carroll with HTK presented a few conceptual designs for the interior for both businesses. The former Tan Time, which was the U.S. Post Office in the 500 block of Fourth Street, will be repurposed into the new City Hall. The current Cornerstone Family Worship at Sixth and Church streets will become the new police station.
Some design improvements planned for the new city hall are a larger public area with accessible entry, accessible public bathroom, additional offices, conference room, increased storage, private staff bathroom, kitchenette and efficient lighting and plumbing fixtures.
Design improvements for the new police station are safety improvements at the entrance for the police clerk, handicapped accessibility, addition of several offices, training and conference room, public and private restrooms, staff shower and restrooms, locker and break areas, interview spaces, larger evidence room and improved equipment.
Carroll also provided some samples of colors, carpet and other materials that are planned for the projects.
For the exterior, Carroll said the color of the building would change in an effort to improve its identity as a police station and not a former church.
Advertising for bids will begin Thursday, with public bid opening March 10 and awarding of contracts March 21. The buildings then are expected to be occupied by September.
The city is financing the projects through a $1.1 million loan agreement with First State Bank and Trust.
Holiday closing vote
The council met on Presidents Day this week, and while some governmental offices and banks were closed, Tonganoxie city offices were open.
After discussing the holiday and whether to be open on the holiday, the council unanimously voted to be closed on Presidents Day starting in 2017.
