THS football standout Trimble signs with Fort Scott Community College

By Shawn Linenberger - | Feb 24, 2016

It hasn’t been the smoothest of high school sports careers for Tonganoxie High senior Dalton Trimble.

Athletes will have their bumps and bruises, but Trimble endured five injuries that sidelined him during various seasons.

Those challenges, though aren’t stopping Trimble.

A football, basketball and track and field athlete at THS, Trimble recently signed a letter of intent to play football at Fort Scott Community College. A ceremony took place Feb. 15 among family, friends, teachers, coaches and administrators.

Trimble likely will play at corner or free safety for the Greyhounds.

“It makes me want to keep going, really,” Trimble said about his past injury setbacks. “From everybody that’s told me I should just give up and quit, it just gives me a reason to keep going and keep proving people wrong.”

Trimble had looked at offers from Ottawa University, Highland Community College and Coffeyville Community College, but eventually selected FSCC.

Former Chieftain James Grizzle, who just finished his playing career at Fort Scott, and THS coach Al Troyer were deciding factors in continuing on with the southeast Kansas college.

“They run the same defense as us and same offense,” Trimble said. “I wouldn’t have such a big learning curve to get over.”

Honorable mention all-Kaw Valley League both as a wide receiver and corner his senior year, Trimble also competes in basketball and track. In the spring, he does the 300 meter hurdles, long jump, triple jump and 4×400 meter relay.

His freshman year, Trimble broke his left hip during a preseason Saturday scrimmage. He broke the hip again the third week of the basketball season. About a month into the track season, he broke the femur in his left foot after landing on it while running hurdles in practice.

During the sophomore campaign, Trimble made it to Week 4 of the football season before breaking his collarbone against Piper in a junior varsity game.

Trimble credited his family with getting him through all of the injuries and being there for him at his signing ceremony

“I just want to thank my mom and dad and my grandparents and brother and sister and girlfriend for everything they’ve done throughout this path,” Trimble said.

THS athletics director Brian Engelken opened the signing ceremony with some remarks before Troyer talked about Trimble’s perseverance and challenges ahead at the next level.

Trimble plans to work toward a degree in education. He wants to be a high school teacher and coach. He also will look to continue his football career after he finishes up at FSCC.

“I’d love to go somewhere bigger and continue playing as long as I can and get my degree,” Trimble said.

At FSCC, Trimble will look to help a Greyhound team that finished 2-8 overall and 1-6 in the rugged Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference in 2015.
