Tourney time is here in Tonganoxie

By Shawn Linenberger - | Jan 21, 2016

The Tonganoxie High girls basketball team had its opportunity to get on a tournament run at its own invitational Monday.

A talented Jeff West team, though, squelched those hopes, thanks in large part to a dominant third quarter.

Jeff West eventually won, 55-20, in a game that had a running clock in the fourth quarter because of the mercy rule.

The Tigers broke out to a 19-8 lead after the first quarter and increased its lead to 18 in the second quarter. JWHS led, 30-12, at the half and put the game definitively out of reach with a 16-2 advantage in the third quarter.

JWHS had three players score in double figures: Mariah Murdle (17), Alyssa Garza (12) and Faith Becker (10).

Taylor Lee again led THS scoring with 11. Mia Bond had 4, Rachel Schuck 2, Lauren Willson 2 and Kaitlin Hall 1.

Jeff West shot 44 percent from the field (20-for-45) and 59 percent from the free-throw line (13-for-22).

Tonganoxie shot just 18 percent from the field (6-for-33). The squad connected on just one shot out of 15 in the second half. It also made about 44 percent of its free throws (7-for-16).

The Tigers also outscored the Chieftains, 21-4, in points off turnovers and held the advantage in rebounds, 40-22.

Tonganoxie will look to get back on track with Thursday’s consolation bracket game against Eudora. Silver Lake defeated EHS, 55-27, in an earlier game Monday. THS and EHS tip off at 4:30 p.m. Thursday

In another girls game Monday, Bonner Springs outlasted Wamego, 44-36.

Those two teams, along with De Soto, are competing in pool play, as it is a seven-team tournament

De Soto played Wamego on Tuesday after The Mirror’s deadline. Bonner Springs and De Soto will play at 6 p.m. Thursday in the final pool play game.

Jeff West and Silver Lake will play at 6 p.m. Friday in the semifinals. The winner of that game plays against the top team coming out of pool play at 4 p.m. Saturday.

The top team coming out of pool play will meet the Silver Lake-Jeff West winner at 4 p.m. Saturday in the championship.

The loser of SLHS-JWHS takes on the No. 2 team out of pool play at 10 a.m. Saturday. The No. 3 pool play team will take on the Tonganoxie-Eudora winner at 3 p.m. Friday.

Boys tourney

With six teams in the 57th annual Tonganoxie Invitational on the boys side, the field has been split into two pools of three teams each.

Wamego, Jeff West and De Soto are in Pool A, while Eudora, Holton and Tonganoxie are in Pool B.

Wamego defeated De Soto, 63-49, Monday.

Wamego played Jeff West and Eudora faced Tonganoxie in games Tuesday that took place after The Mirror’s deadline.

Pool play continues Thursday with a 7:30 p.m. game between Eudora and Holton.

Pool play will conclude Friday with Jeff West-De Soto and 4:30 p.m. and Holton-Tonganoxie at 7:30 p.m.

The third-place teams in each pool will play at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, while the second-place pool teams will square off at 2:30 p.m. The championship game between pool winners will start at 5:30 p.m. Saturday.

If all three teams have 1-1 records, the point-differential system used in football districts will be utilized to determine standings. If a tie still exists, least points allowed will be used.
