Eudora outlasts THS girls in tournament consolation game

Senior Kaitlin Hall nailed a deep three to bring Tonganoxie within one possession at 40-37. But Eudora senior LeAnne Anderson scored two of her eight points on her next trip to the free throw line, which effectively sealed the Tonganoxie Chieftains fate in a 45-37 loss to the Eudora Cardinals in the first game in the consolation bracket of the Tonganoxie Basketball Invitational.

After junior Bryson Clark’s game-tying three pointer bounced twice off the rim and in with 34 seconds left to force overtime, Holton had all of the momentum heading into overtime against Tonganoxie. Even after the Chieftains blew a late fourth-quarter lead, they outscored the Wildcats 8-4 to win their first game of the season to improve their record to 1-9.

The Eudora boys basketball team breezed through the Tonganoxie Invitational last week, winning its first two games by 20 and 40 points, respectively, before taking the championship by 29. Eudora defeated Tonganoxie, 57-37, in its first game and then throttled Holton, 68-28, on Friday. The Cardinals then defeated Wamego, 57-28, in the championship game Saturday.

Tonganoxie earmarks $31,500 for sesquicentennial celebration

The Tonganoxie City Council has earmarked $31,500 for the Tonganoxie Sesquicentennial celebration this summer. The council approved the measure, 5-0, at a rescheduled meeting last week. Council Members Curtis Oroke and Kara Reed are on the event’s steering committee and presented a proposal for the funding request.

Joyce Slater recounted her childhood Monday at the Myers Hotel. She spoke of sleeping in a bedroom of several siblings. “Now that was cooperation,” she said. “Most of us today are very sound sleepers.” Slater, who has been an active storyteller since 1989, served as speaker for the Entrepreneurs Achieving Success Together annual celebration.

A 54-year-old Tonganoxie pleaded no contest to two cases Friday in Leavenworth County District Court. Warren P. Thompson entered a no contest plea to one charge of aggravated child endangerement and another for possession of a methamphetamine.
