Tonganoxie High baseball players, alums help area team win state USSSA baseball tournament

Current — and recently former — Tonganoxie High baseball players have contributed to a state championship in summer competition. Dante Nelson, Dominik Novotney and Jordan Brown, who all will be seniors at THS when school starts next month, and graduates Billy Kelley and Tyler Novotney are members of the Midwest Braves team that just won the USSSA 18-and-under state championship last month.

Ben Johnson has gotten the hang of mult-tasking at Wichita State. The 2014 Tonganoxie High School graduate just finished his redshirt freshman campaign for the WSU track team as a decathlete. That means Johnson competes in shot put, discus, javelin, high jump, long jump, pole vault, hurdles, the 100 meters, the 400 meters and the mile run. Johnson definitely gets his fill of track and field at Cessna Stadium in Wichita.

Fundraiser set for family violence group

Alliance against Family Violence will have its Night of Empowerment to help raise money for the local organization. The event will be 6:30-10 p.m. Aug. 12 at the Schwinn Produce Farm, Leavenworth. Free lunch program at Tonganoxie Middle School continues through July 22

Tonganoxie Middle School again is offering free summer meals for all youths and teens ages 1-18. The program, which is funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, will finish up its two-month stint July 22. Meal times are 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Adult meals are available for $3.45. Tonganoxie USD 464 moving end-of-year balance to help cover facility improvements

Tonganoxie USD 464 will be looking to address capital improvements in the coming school year. New Superintendent Chris Kleidosty told the board that the district’s end-of-year transfer balance was about $269,000. He said in talking with personnel, it was his recommendation to earmark those funds for capital outlay to address some improvement projects that are in need of completion. One candidate is updating the district’s track at Beatty Field.

A longtime Leavenworth County resident who has spent much of her career working for major commercial construction and engineering firms is vying to be the next 3rd District representative on the Leavenworth County Commission. Bev Hill has been on the campaign trail in recent months as she prepares for a crowded Republican primary race with incumbent Dennis Bixby and fellow challengers Doug Smith and John Matthews.
