Tonganoxie HIgh girls relays place with new school marks

School records fell for two Tonganoxie High relay teams and another competitor medaled in all three events at state in his final weekend of his high school career at the state track and field championships in Wichita.

The THS girls 4x400 and 4x800 teams both set new school records at the state meet.

The 4x800 team of Emma Campbell, Emily Chambers, Sierra Staatz and Mia Bond placed fourth at state with a new school record time of 9 minutes, 56.93 seconds.

Later Saturday, the 4x400 team of Sierra Staatz, Corrin Searcy, Cami Timm and Mia Bond placed seventh with a 4:10.9 time for another school record time.

Bond also competed in the 800, Timm in the 300 hurdles and Autumn Johnson in the shot put but none was able to place in those individual events. Bond placed 14th, while Timm had the 12th-best time in the 300 hurdle prelims. Johnson finished 11th in shot put.

On the boys side, Dylan Staatz nabbed three medals and LeeRoi Johnson added another.

He placed eighth in the high jump (6-2), fifth in the triple jump (43-7.75) and fifth in the long jump (20-8.75).

LeeRoi Johnson placed fifth with a throw of 159-9 in the discus.

David Scharff had the 10th-best time in the 300 hurdle preliminaries.

The boys finished 13th out of 42 teams with 13 points. Bishop Miege won the state team title with 61 points. Andale placed second with 45.5 points.

On the girls side, THS tied with Independence for 24th with 7 points. Baldwin won another state title in 4A with 95.5 points at the end of all competition. Andale placed second with 71.33 points.

Weather postponed some events scheduled for Friday until Saturday. The meet still concluded Saturday, but ended later than usual because of the moved events.
