Crowded Leavenworth County Commission race highlights local election season

By Shawn Linenberger - | Jun 14, 2016

Several candidates will be running for county positions in the August primary.

According to Janet Klasinski, Leavenworth County clerk, there are many contested races.

In the Leavenworth County Commission’s 3rd District race, incumbent Dennis Bixby of Tonganoxie has three challengers in the Republican primary. John M. Matthews, of Basehor, as well as Doug Smith and Bev Hill of Tonganoxie are running in the primary. The Third District covers much of the southern portion of the county, including Basehor, Tonganoxie and Linwood.

In the 2nd District race, Republican incumbent Clyde Graeber faces opposition from Louis Klemp Jr., also of Leavenworth. That district covers Leavenworth and Lansing.

In the county treasurer race, there is no primary, but Republican incumbent Janice Van Parys is facing a general election challenger in Democrat Kelly Kultala, of Basehor. Kultala is a former state legislator.

There are four other races, but incumbents are running unopposed in them: Register of Deeds Stacy Driscoll, a Leavenworth Democrat, is running unopposed, as are Leavenworth County Attorney Todd Thompson, R-Leavenworth, Leavenworth County Sheriff Andy Dedeke, R-Easton, and Kasinski, R-Leavenworth.
