Tonganoxie Middle School Science Olympiad prepares for state appearance

By Shawn Linenberger - | Mar 21, 2016

The Tonganoxie High School Science Olympiad team has been making history with recent performances at regional competition.

The team’s middle school counterpart is doing pretty well on the Science Olympiad circuit as well.

Tonganoxie Middle School participated in regional competition last month and, like the THS squad, qualified for the state competition April 2 on the Wichita State University campus.

TMS placed 13th overall in regional play.

Bryn Reed collaborated with three teammates to place in three different events.

She joined forces with Carmen Snyder and placed second in Write It/Do It. She also teamed with Kristian Perez and placed sixth in Crime Busters. And in the anatomy category, Bryn combined with Peyton Woods for a sixth-place finish.

In other categories, Destiny Dishman, Tessa Calovich and Caden Phillips placed sixth in experimental design, while Peyton Woods and Alex Crenshaw placed sixth in Crave the Wave.

Co-coaches for the team are Amber York, Samantha Schnittger and Michael Bush.

“This team is amazing,” said Bush, speaking on behalf of all of the team’s coaches. “Of the 15 starters, this was the first competition for 11 of them.

“To finish 13th in the northeast region and now being invited to state finals is a tribute to these Olympians.”

The regional appearance also was the first for Schnittger.

Both the THS and TMS teams will look to make some noise at state later next week at Wichita State. The THS team placed first in its regional for the first time in school history last month.
