By Shawn Linenberger - | Mar 24, 2016

The spring season is starting in Tonganoxie and McLouth.

Tonganoxie High baseball and girls soccer got their seasons started Tuesday with action in Kansas City, Kan.

THS girls soccer defeated Bishop Ward, 6-0, at the BWHS football stadium, while the junior varsity baseball team opened at the nearby Bishop Ward baseball field.

Varsity baseball and softball, meanwhile, get their seasons started today with home contests against Bishop Ward. The THS baseball team split with Bishop Ward today. BW won the first game, 8-5, while THS won the nightcap, 3-1. The THS girls soccer continues on the road Thursday at Louisburg, with varsity playing at 4 p.m. and junior varsity at 5:30 p.m.

THS baseball continues with a doubleheader starting at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in Meriden against Jefferson West.

Girls soccer continues with a Tuesday home opener against Maranatha Christian Academy and a Wednesday, March 30 match at Spring Hill.

The THS golf team opens the season at 2 p.m. March 31 at Bonner Springs High School.

THS track opens its season April 1 with a meet in Junction City. Other teams competing there with THS and JCHS are Great Bend, Hays, Salina Central, Salina South, Shawnee Heights and Turner.

Girls soccer continues with a match at Lansing.

The girls soccer team looks to improve on last year’s 6-8-2 campaign, while the THS baseball team tries to bounce back from last year’s injury-ridden season. THS went 6-15 after advancing to state the previous season.

For the Tonganoxie High softball team, expectations are high after the Chieftains just missed out on a Class 4A Division I state berth last season. A furious seventh-inning fell short for THS as it lost to Baldwin at the Baldwin regional. THS was the No. 1 seed at the regional and finished the season 11-8. THS returns most of last year’s team this season.

The THS softball team won, 18-1 and 19-0 against Bishop Ward today.

MHS opens season

McLouth softball is eyeing another state berth. The Bulldogs finished 21-5 last season, placing third in Class 2-1A.

The MHS baseball team, meanwhile, went 16-5 last season. It was a successful campaign, but the squad had to face undefeated Troy in the opening round of a 2-1A regional at Highland.

MHS softball opened the season Tuesday at Atchison in a doubleheader that took place after The Mirror’s print deadline. The Bulldogs next play March 31 in Perry against Perry-Lecompton and then April 1 near Easton against Pleasant Ridge.

McLouth’s season opener is April 4 against Riverside.

The MHS baseball team opened the season Tuesday on the road at Fall City, Neb. It then play Thursday at Wellsville, March 31 at Heritage Christian and April 7 in Leavenworth against Immaculata.

McLouth’s home opener isn’t until April 11 against Troy.

Bulldog track and field gets started April 5 with the Oskaloosa Invitational.

The McLouth Invitational is April 8.
