Tonganoxie softball moves to 3-1 after split with Perry-Lecompton

Perry-Lecompton handed the Tonganoxie High softball team its first loss of the season, but the Chieftains bounced back for victory in the second game in a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday in Perry.

PLHS, formerly a Kaw Valley League member, won the first game, 5-3, before Tonganoxie responded with a 7-6 victory in the second game.

The Kaws jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first game in the first inning before THS responded with 2 runs of its own in the third inning. PLHS, though scored 2 runs in the fourth and 2 runs in the fifth for a 5-2 lead. THS rallied with a run in the top of the seventh, but it wasn’t enough.

PLHS had 10 hits to Tonganoxie’s five. The Kaws also got the victory despite committing three errors in the game. Tonganoxie had no miscues in the loss.

Halley Calovich and Reagan Bennett each had a double in the loss, while Audrey Miller connected for a home run.

In the second game, Tonganoxie battled back from a 3-0 deficit and produced a final-inning run on its way to a 7-6 victory.

Perry-Lecompton opened with a 1-0 lead after the first inning and a 3-0 lead after two innings.

But a 3-run third and a 3-run fourth helped THS to a 6-4 lead.

The Kaws scored 2 in the bottom of the fifth and tied up the game.

Audrey Miller opened the Chieftain half of the seventh with a single. She then stole second and then third before scoring on Torrissa Hootman’s ground ball to third.

Perry-Lecompton opened the bottom of the seventh with a lead-off hit, but then was doubled up on a line drive. PLHS then flied out for the final out of the game.

Miller also had a triple in the game, while Bennett hit a homer. Miller, Bennett and Hootman each had 2 RBI in the victory. Mackenzie Sample added another RBI for the Chieftains.

THS moved to 3-1 on the season.

Tonganoxie had 12 hits and 3 errors. PLHS had 8 hits and 1 error.
