Tonganoxie High softball looks to end skid on Senior Night; baseball hopes for similar results
Tonganoxie High softball was rolling in the early going of the season.
The Chieftains hope they can recapture that spark as regionals approach.
The squad was hitting on virtually all cylinders after 11 games. The Chieftains were 9-2 at that point.
THS, though, lost a rain-drenched game to Spring Hill, 10-7, on April 29. That started a seven-game skid that has left the team at .500 with a 9-9 record.
Tonganoxie lost a doubleheader Monday to the team that kept the Chieftains one step away from state last year. Baldwin won, 7-2, and 12-8, Monday in Baldwin.
Tonganoxie had a 1-0 lead in the first game, but Baldwin responded and took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the third. THS answered to make it 3-2 in the fourth, but the Bulldogs added a pair of runs in the fifth and sixth for the 7-2 victory. THS again had the early in the second game with 2-0 advantage in the second. BHS tied it in the third and jumped ahead, 4-2, in the fourth. Tonganoxie had the 5-4 lead in the middle of the fifth after three runs that inning, but Baldwin put up four runs in both the fifth and sixth for a 12-5 advantage. THS rallied with three in the top of the seventh, but it wasn’t enough as the team fell, 12-8.
The teams combined for 30 hits in the game (THS had 13). Tonganoxie also committed four errors to Baldwin’s lone miscue.
Tonganoxie dropped road games Thursday to Mill Valley, 12-4 and 16-6. And on May 3, Basehor-Linwood outlasted the team in two tight contests. BLHS won the first game, 9-6, and slipped past THS in the second game, 3-2.
The Chieftains haven’t won since April 21 when the squad easily handled Turner in a doubleheader sweep. But Senior Night today could help get the team back on track in its regular-season finale.
THS takes on Piper in the final doubleheader. Games start at 4 p.m. Wednesday at the Leavenworth County Fairgrounds.
Tonganoxie currently is the No. 3 seed in for its own Class 4A Division I regional. THS could become the No. 2 seed with a sweep of Piper, but regardless, will play Atchison in the first round. AHS is 11-9 on the season. Eudora is the top seed at 12-6, while De Soto is the No. 4 seed at 5-13. Regionals will be played Tuesday at the Leavenworth County Fairgrounds.
THS baseball also finishes with Senior Night on Wednesday. THS is the No. 5 seed in its regional, which also will be at the fairgrounds. The Chieftains are 6-11. Sumner is the No. 1 seed (13-4), Piper No. 2 (12-4), Basehor-Linwood No. 3 (13-7) and Bishop Miege No. 4 (10-8). THS and Miege will play Monday, with the remaining games Tuesday.
Tonganoxie plays Piper in today’s regular-season doubleheader finale starting at 4 p.m.
