Tonganoxie High School valedictorian Spencer Finkbiner thanked some of his teachers for their great mentoring at Saturday’s commencement exercises, but at one point during his speech, he admitted that he wasn’t the foremost authority on giving thoughtful and inspiring speeches to his peers. “Just this week my mom had to remind me how to sort my laundry,” Finkbiner said. “And you want me to give you worthwhile, life-directing advice? I’m just a kid.
Tonganoxie School Board again tables contract decision for Parker; 200 attend meeting

The Tonganoxie School Board again has tabled a decision on whether to renew a teacher’s contract as roughly 200 patrons looked on at Monday’s special meeting. The board voted, 4-3, to table the item until the state decides next month whether to censure the teacher. Board Members Bryan Kemp, Michelle McGhee and Kris Grinter voted against the measure. The board originally scheduled the special meeting to discuss selection of finalists for the district’s new superintendent Monday at the Tonganoxie Middle School library.
Tonganoxie City Council approves hiring legal counsel for potential proceedings with RV resort group

The Tonganoxie City Council has approved hiring counsel for any potential work with a group looking to build luxury RV resort just east of Tonganoxie. The council approved, 4-0, an agreement with Shannon Marcano to negotiate any development agreements. Mayor Jason Ward and Council Member Andy Gilner were absent from Monday’s meeting.
Tonganoxie Sesquicentennial organizers asking for residents to show up Sunday for lip dub video

Tonganoxie Sesquicentennial organizers are looking to promote the event this Sunday, but they need the community’s help. With assistance from Tonganoxie High School video production students and Gab Local TV of Topeka, organizers are trying to put together lip dub segment for the community. Lip dub is a form of lip syncing to music in a video.
Southern Leavenworth County Leadership Development graduates 12 students for 2015-16

This year’s Southern Leavenworth County Leadership Development Class had 12 graduates. The students received their graduation awards during a luncheon May 4 at the Bob Wiley Memorial VFW Post 11499 in Basehor. Class members hail from Tonganoxie, Basehor and Lansing and were recognized for completing the eight-month course.
