Genesis Christian Academy Camo Night is Friday in Tonganoxie
Genesis Christian Academy is about to present its third annual Camo Night, but this year’s event will have some new flavor.
The event was designed as a father-son evening of entertainment, but the event will be an opportunity for the entire family to enjoy the outdoors — inside GCA’s Family Life Center.
Organizer Gina Grier said many raffle prizes will be handed out and demonstrations given on duck calling and hunting dogs. There’s even a chili cook off planned for the event, which is 6-9 p.m. Friday at the GCA gymnasium.
“There are just as many little girls out there who can hunt and fish just as well as boys out there,” she said.
Outdoor enthusiasts will have the opportunity to win prime prizes, but Grier also is looking forward to those demonstrations.
Muddy Creek Game Birds will be bringing professional hunting dogs for the event. The Muddy Creek Kennel will bring a dog that was featured on the series Bird Dog War as one of the Top 12 dogs in the World, and took forth in Dog of the Year in 2015. They will also bring a Grand Master Pointing lab and Master Hunter. Grier said the dogs were “superstars” in the gaming world.
The Kansas Chapter of Ducks Unlimited will conduct duck call demonstrations and calling techniques. They’ll also hand out duck call kits for children.
As for the chili cook off, prizes of $100, $70 and $40 will be given to the top three.
Cost is $10 for adults and $7 for youths. Judging starts at 6:30 p.m., with winners being announced at 7 p.m. There also will be chili for sale, along with hot dogs and items for Frito chili pie. For those with a sweet tooth, ice cream floats will be served.
And, various exhibitors will be stationed throughout the gymnasium at the event.
Children’s activities include a Nerf shooting gallery, face painting, owl pellet dissection, photo booth. Wearing of camo gear is encouraged, but not required.
The raffle prizes will be a variety of goods, with many catering to outdoor enthusiasts, such as archery lessons, self-guided hunting tours, backpacks and even a year’s supply of dog food.
Grier stressed that the event was for the entire community and she hoped many would come check out the festivities.
“We’re hoping to have a really good turnout,” Grier said.
Proceeds from the event will go towards GCA classroom technology and the school’s fine arts program.
