Historic runs
Tonganoxie High’s cross country fortunes at regionals provided a notable spot in school history.
The team’s results at state provided an even bigger addition to the history annals.
Tonganoxie placed fifth at state for both the boys and girls teams in the same season for the first time since 1989.
And, the team landed an individual runner in the top 10.
Senior Drew Cook led THS with a 10th-place finish in the Class 4A boys race.
Cook finished the race in 17 minutes, 28.31 seconds. Wichita Collegiate junior Lakelin Conrad won the meet with a 16:14.62 time.
Fellow THS senior Carter Kietzmanm placed 24th (17:47.87), with sophomore Calvin Morgan next in Tonganoxie’s lineup. Morgan finished in 18:20.71.
Sophomore Jakob Foley placed 65th (19:01.16) and junior Chandler Hamman 73rd (19:12.85), with Joshua Bosley placing 78th (19:28.11) and freshman Dylan Graham 80th (19:34).
In the girls race, senior Emily Chambers led the pack with a 28th-place finish (21:20.21), while junior Mia Bond, who was the team’s top finisher much of the year, wasn’t far behind in 36th (21:40.97).
Junior Sierra Staatz placed 52nd (22:18.56), junior Alyssa Scott 59th (22:28.8) and senior Hope Creten 62nd (22:31.47). Sophomore Mathia Slinkard finished 68th (22:39.73) and junior Emma Campbell 80th (23:06.2).
Maize South won the boys team title with 67 points. Smoky Valley placed second (72) and Andover Central third (87) and Towanda Circle fourth (87). Tonganoxie scored 147 for fifth. Ulysses took sixth (169), Wamego seventh (174), Fort Scott eighth (208), Girard ninth (224), Pratt 10th (228), Spring Hill 11th (230) and Iola 12th (300).
Maize South also won the girls title with 31 points. Andover Central nabbed second (56), Towanda Circle third (99 and Baldwin placed fourth (136). Tonganoxie scored 174 for fifth. The rest of the field was Fort Scott sixth (202), Hays seventh (205), Clay Center eighth (212), Buhler ninth (228), Basehor-Linwood 10th (228), Girard 11th (238) and Frontenac 12th (251).
The MSHS team titles meant this year was the first time Baldwin didn’t win either a boys or girls crown since 2012.
