THS staging ‘The Drowsy Chaperone’ Thursday through Sunday

The Tonganoxie High School drama and music departments will be presenting “The Drowsy Chaperone: The Musical within a Comedy” later this week.

Shows are 7 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday at the Tonganoxie Performing Arts Center on the THS campus. Cost is $8 for adults, $6 for senior citizens and students, $5 for anyone ages 10 and younger.

According to Music Theatre International,, “The Drowsy Chaperone” is about a die-hard theatre fan who plays his favorite cast album. Characters from the show come to life in the musical farce. Winner of five Tony Awards, including Best Book and Best Original Score, “The Drowsy Chaperone” is a loving send-up of the Jazz Age musical.

With the houselights down, a man in a chair appears on stage and puts on his favorite record: the cast recording of a fictitious 1928 musical. The recording comes to life and “The Drowsy Chaperone” begins as the man in the chair looks on. Mix in two lovers on the eve of their wedding, a bumbling best man, a desperate theatre producer, a not-so-bright hostess, two gangsters posing as pastry chefs, a misguided Don Juan and an intoxicated chaperone, and you have the ingredients for an evening of madcap delight, according to

Hailed by New York Magazine as “The perfect broadway musical,” “The Drowsy Chaperone” is a meta-musical, poking fun at all the tropes that characterize the musical theatre genre.

Several THS students will be performing in this fall musical on the Tonganoxie High School campus.

Nathan Bothwell will play the Man in Chair, Gabby Crockett will play the role of Mrs. Tottendale and Madisen Lansing is the Underling.

Braden Shryock is Robert Martin, Samuel Sigourney is George and Dylan Kroll is Feldzeig, while Emily Fletcher will take the role of Kitty, Ian Slater will be Gangster No. 1 and Brayden Cox is Gangster No. 2.

Matthew Scharff will be Aldopho, while Grace Woods is Janet Van De Graff and Allison Williams the Drowsy Chaperone.

Molly Monahan will play Trix the Aviatrix and Samanatha Knipp the building superintendent.

Ensemble 1 is Bailey Jackson, Hannah Kobe, Anna Soetaert, Kristian Perez, Lauren Lawson and Payton Lynn.

Ensemble 2 is Erin Colacicco, Ethan Edmonds, Brenden Rogers and Maureen Wetta.

Student Manager is Ethan Stone.

Music and lyrics for the musical are by Lisa Lambert and Greg Morrison. The musical is based on a book by Bob Martin and Don McKellar.
