Tonganoxie High cross country team once again made a clean sweep this year with its showing Thursday at the Perry-Lecompton Invitational.
THS won both varsity team titles and both junior varsity team titles.
The Tonganoxie varsity boys placed first in their 11-team race with 39 and Kansas City East Christian Academy a distant second with 80. Pleasant Ridge finished third (117) and Bishop Miege fourth (121).
The THS girls took first out of nine teams with 57, while Bishop Miege took second (71) and Atchison third (85). Host school Perry-Lecompton finished fourth with 99.
In JV action, Tonganoxie won the boys’ seven-team event with 33 points. Bishop Miege placed second with 58. And for the girls JV team, THS scored 26 to Bishop Miege’s 30. There were only two teams fielding full squads.
Drew Cook finished third in the boys varsity race in 17 minutes, 5 seconds, while Carter Kietzman took second in 17:52. Chandler Hamman was eighth (18:03), Calvin Morgan ninth (18:04) and Dylan Graham 13th (18:28). Scott Vick placed 18th in 18:39 and 20th Jakob Foley in 18:46.
Mia Bond again was the top finisher in the girls varsity race. She finished in 20:44, while Emily Chambers finished fifth (21:30) and Sierra Staatz 12th (21:59). Mathia Slinkard finished 19th (22:46) and Alyssa Scott 21st (22:50). Other Chieftains finishing in the top 30 were Erin Williams 28th (23:04) and 29th (23:08).
Jake Edholm placed first (19:02), Josh Bosley second (19:25) and Adrian Cullen seventh (20:25) in the boys JV race. In the girls JV race, Emma Campbell won the race in 22:03, Taylor Lynne placed third (24:40) and Martina Tamburello fifth (25:34).
Junior varsity competed Tuesday at the varsity McLouth Invitational after The Mirror’s print deadline. Varsity is back in action at 9 a.m. Saturday with the Pleasant Ridge Invitational.
Volleyball notches 2 more victories
Tonganoxie High volleyball improved to 14-7 on the season with victories Thursday at a triangular at Sumner Academy in KCK.
The Chieftains defeated Spring Hill, 25-19, 25-20 and then Sumner, 25-11, 25-12. THS lost earlier in the week at home against Bonner Springs after defeating BSHS in the Tonganoxie Invitational.
THS played at home against Piper on Tuesday after The Mirror’s deadline. The team is back in action Thursday with a triangular against Jeff West and Pleasant Ridge near Easton.
Those matches will be warmup for the De Soto Spikefest on Saturday. Matches start at 8 a.m. in De Soto.
A trio of hard-fought games has left the THS soccer team with a three-match losing streak.
Louisburg snapped Tonganoxie’s eight-match winning streak Sept. 26 with a 1-0 overtime victory at the Chieftain Park Sports Complex.
Kansas City Christian then handed THS another tough loss with a 1-0 victory in a road game.
Tonganoxie was back home Monday for a Kaw Valley League clash with Lansing.
Despite goals from Logan Williams and Hayden Robbins, the Chieftains fell in double overtime, 3-2, on a penalty kick by the Lions.
Now 8-4 on the season, Tonganoxie is back home with a 6 p.m. varsity match Thursday against Bishop Ward.
