Tonganoxie High volleyball 5th at Rossville Invitational

The Tonganoxie High volleyball team finished its first tournament of the season with a winning record.

THS placed fifth Saturday at the Rossville Invitational with a 3-2 record.

Tonganoxie opened pool play with a victory against Ottawa, 25-22, 17-25, 25-20.

Silver Lake then took care of THS in three, 25-21, 22-25, 25-11.

In their third match of pool play, the Chieftains took on the Abilene Cowgirls. AHS won, 25-16, 25-13.

In the final match of pool play, THS dropped Clay Center, 25-20, 25-22.

In the consolation bracket, THS defeated host Rossville, 25-27, 25-19, 25-19. El Dorado dropped Clay Center in the other consolation bracket match, 15-25, 25-20, 26-24.

In the tournament semifinals, Silver Lake dropped Wamego, 25-22, 19-25, 25-14 and Abilene outlasted De Soto, 25-19, 16-25, 25-19.

De Soto took third with a 25-14, 25-17 two-set match victory against Wamego and Silver Lake won the tournament with a three-set victory against Abilene, 25-20, 21-25, 25-17.

Tonganoxie lost to Basehor-Linwood in three sets in a best-of-five dual Sept. 13 in Basehor and then swept Pleasant Ridge, 3-0, Thursday near Easton.

The Chieftains, now 7-4 on the season, prepares for their own Tonganoxie Invitational, which starts at 8 a.m. Saturday.

Teams at the tournament this year are Bishop Ward, Bonner Springs, Eudora, Gardner- Edgerton, Great Bend, Ottawa, Piper, Shawnee Mission Northwest and Topeka High.

The Chieftains stay busy with home matches Monday and Tuesday against Kansas City Christian and Bonner Springs, respectively, at home. The KC Christian match starts at 5 p.m. and BSHS at 6 p.m. at the THS gymnasium.


Cross country at Rim Rock

The THS cross country team is back on the trail Saturday with the Rim Rock Classic. The Chieftains had their Tonganoxie Invitational on Tuesday after The Mirror’s print deadline.

Results from that meet, as well as the Rim Rock Classic on Saturday, can be found online at tonganoxiemirror.com and through The Mirror’s social media pages. Saturday’s meets start at 11:30 a.m. at Rim Rock Farm, home to the University of Kansas’ cross country team. The course is between Lawrence and McLouth.

The team’s next meet is Sept. 29 at Perry-Lecompton.

McLouth gets in win column

The McLouth High football team had reason to celebrate Friday.

MHS handled the Immaculata-Maranatha football team, 39-6, on the road for the Bulldogs’ first victory of the season.

Now 1-2, Gary Freeman’s team is home to Pleasant Ridge on Friday. The Rams also are 1-2 ager falling lats week to Jefferson County North, 22-6.

MHS was scheduled to host its cross country invitational last Thursday but course conditions forced a postponement. The meet now will take place Oct. 4.
