Tonganoxie’s Johnson heaves best discus throw in state at WSU meet; MHS athletes join THS competitors in Wichita

A Tonganoxie thrower now leads the state in discus after his final throw this past weekend at Wichita State University. LeeRoi Johnson, competing with fellow Chieftains at WSU’s high school pre-state meet, launched the discus 176 feet, 2 inches on his sixth and final throw. That marks the top throw so far in the state and puts him near the top 50 nationally. That throw came in the elite division, one of three at the WSU meet. There also were 1A-3A and 4A-6A divisions. Johnson also won the shot put in the 4A-6A division with a 48-0.75 throw.

Tonganoxie High girls soccer team got its first victory of the season with a 6-0 victory against Bishop Ward last week. THS (1-4-1) was supposed to play Baldwin on Monday at home, but field conditions forced the postponement. A makeup has yet to be scheduled.
Chemistry key for Tonganoxie High softball in early going

Early on in the 2017 Tonganoxie High softball campaign, coach Stephanie Wittman thought her team had its strengths, but one intangible continues to be the squad’s biggest asset. “I think our team chemistry is the top thing going for our team right now,” Wittman said. It’s hard to argue with Wittman there.
State speaker to discuss communities and better involvement tonight in Tonganoxie

A staff member of Public Square Communities, Inc., who is part of numerous statewide initiatives will speak tonight in Tonganoxie. Liz Sosa of Garden City will lead a community discussion from 5:30-7:30 p.m. today at the Chieftain Room on the Tonganoxie High School campus.
Building activity up in Tonganoxie

There’s a lot of building activity these days in Tonganoxie. Assistant City Manager Jamie Shockley presented numbers at Monday’s City Council meeting. She noted that Tonganoxie leads the county in single-resident building permits being issued so far this year. Shockley said many numbers are encouraging so far this year, including 26 percent of budget estimates have been collected for sales tax. That’s up from 13 percent at this time in 2016. Shockley said she wanted to research why that number has doubled from last year.
Mayors for Meals in Tonganoxie

To help raise awareness of this service and its demand in the community, each year, the Council on Aging participates in Meals on Wheels of America’s “March for Meals” campaign. Tonganoxie Mayor Jason Ward, as he has done often in recent years, helped deliver meals to homebound seniors last month in Tonganoxie as part of mayoral support acoss the country.
